Hallo… iwas following your oficial ubuntu install notes from forum… step by step…
it works… installation… was ok. .
i am using xubuntu 8.04 with alsa… primary…
now oss.
due reason that i was not able to let sound it… with alsa…so i tryed… oss…
i setuped my sys… to work with alsa… without any problems…
but i did not found succes… so i let played song… it played but without any sound…i tryed this think with mute… with alsa to oss…
i found ultra mixer like VERY SLOW AND USELESS app…
my primaryidea was… ok gnome… i tryed it with xfce4 with the same result… with NO RESULT…
P4 2.6 GHz… 768 MB ram … on board sound card… acer travelmate 250 notebook.
i had read a ithink all combination of problems… in forums all over the internet. i spent 3 night… from my vacation… my most expensive time… with these piece of cake… and trust me… i wil eat it… 
i use blender and dr que… in coop with next 4 PC. P4 HT… on combined 100Mbit and firewire network. and i was crazy… after theese 3 nights…
so my firts idea was… ok i test it and if it is piece of software which is considerable i will install it on big box… like… hoby till it renders… but i am not sure if it is so faithfull to be instaled on production box.
please give me some advice,… i am really ill… from it.
