I got a similar error when just trying to play an mp3 file.
(Linux 2.6.14.4 Slackware 10.2)

Hi you 2,

it seems I heard this issue before. It might be that you have running a Jackd based system. This seems to block any other system to open sound card handles. Maybe we can find a workaround to this.
